On the centenary of radio’s existence in Poland, we would like to invite you to reflect on its contemporary form, the texts created within it, as well as the genre transformations and relationships with new technologies.
Radio is a medium that has been accompanying communities for decades, and we aim to reflect on its contemporary character. In light of current technological and cultural challenges, we want to examine its role as a space for socially engaged art and as a place where communities are formed. In the context of the centenary celebrations, this reflection takes on special significance, allowing us to consider both the historical perspective and the future development possibilities of the medium.
During the conference, we intend to address the following topics, among others:
- Community radio and radio communities: What are the contemporary models of community radio, and how do interactions between broadcasters and listeners develop around them?
- Radio or audio? Genre transformations: How do technological and media changes affect the perception of radio as a medium, and what are the consequences for radio genres?
- Writing radio, not for radio – radio art: What is the place of radio art in contemporary stations, and how has its functioning changed in the digital era?
- Radio and technology: How have technological changes influenced radio texts, radio semiotic codes, and its position in the dynamically changing media landscape?
- Radio as a space: From random encounters to on-demand radio – how have radio spaces changed under the influence of new listening habits and ways of interaction with the medium?
The conference situates research on radio and sound within the broader context of contemporary media studies, opening a space for dialogue with research on digital platforms and internet media, sound studies, media history, and cultural studies.
The conference aims for an interdisciplinary reflection on radio as a medium – both in its historical dimension and in the context of its current form and future transformations. We invite researchers, creators, and practitioners to join the discussion on the role of radio and audiality in society and culture. Following the conference, a publication of selected articles will be planned in a special issue of the journal The Problems of Literary Genres.
